Yesterday at Publix, Faith and I noticed a cooler containing 3 new flavors of Mountain Dew. Well, being a fan of the original and its previous incarnations, we decided to pick up a couple of bottles to give them a try. Well after trying 2 out of the 3 new flavors all I can say is Eww.
The first bottle tried is Mountain Dew SuperNova. The soda is a pinkish-purple and the odd color should have been the first warning as to what was contained inside. The label says that this is "Dew with a Blast of Strawberry Melon Flavor and Ginseng". Hmm, sounds interesting, so I open it up and take a Kevin sized gulp. Ugh, it almost comes back out. This is crap, it tastes like medicine. Whoever is in charge a Pepsi Co who decided to unleash this purple looking impostor of a soda on the market should be drawn and quartered, in public.
Well after managing to choke down about 10 ounces of that purple crap, we decided to try out the next bottle, Mountain Dew Voltage. This soda is a bit more appealing electric blue, and strangely enough that's how it tasted, blue. That's the fist thing Faith and I both said. "Hmmm, this tastes blue." This one is touted as "Dew Charged with Raspberry Citrus Flavor and Ginseng". The raspberry flavor is there for sure. I will say that this is better than that Supernova crap, but it is for sure not something I will ever spend $0.89 on ever again.
So after all was said and done, I decided to give the ingredient list a once over. what I found was interesting, both drinks have IDENTICAL ingredients. Here are some of the more interesting inclusions.
Sodium benzoate - a preservative derived from salt
Sodium citrate - another salt based preservative that is also listed as a flavor enhancer
and finally the most disturbing
Brominated vegetable oil - vegetable oil that has had atoms of the element bromine bonded to it
First, that's a lot of salt, and last, who in the world wants to drink vegetable oil. Health nuts always told me that sodas are bad for you, but I just figured it was because of the sugar. Turns out I was wrong, it's because some sodas are liquid salt licks coated in vegetable oil. No wonder we live in such an overweight society (me included). As of now, I am swearing off any drink that has a list of ingredients that I have to Google to find out what they are.

I learned that a long time ago.
I enjoy a good Diet Mountain Dew from time to time.
However, never, ever try new flavors of Mountain Dew.
